To create even better course content, TalentLMS lets you add questions in the GIFT and AIKEN formats to your tests.
Here's how to do that in a few steps:
1. Sign in to your TalentLMS account as Instructor and go to a course page.
2. On the course content list, point to a test and click edit.
3. On the right-hand panel, under Add question (1), click Import (2).
4. From the Type (3) drop-down list, choose the question format (i.e., AIKEN or GIFT).
5. In the Data text area, type your questions according to the available examples (4).
6. Click Preview to check if your questions are correct, and click Save to import them.
Note: You can import more than one question at a time by leaving a blank line between them. |
To get more familiar with the GIFT and AIKEN question formats, have a look at these guidelines & examples:
AIKEN
AIKEN supports multiple choice questions with a single correct answer.
An AIKEN question entry must follow these rules:
- The question must be typed as a single line.
- Each answer must be typed on a different line and preceded by a single letter (either lowercase or uppercase) and a period (e.g., A.) or a closing round bracket (e.g., A)).
- The correct answer is represented by its respective letter. The letter, preceded by "ANSWER:", must be typed on the last line.
Example 1
Pick the odd one out a. Europe b. Asia c. Greenland d. Australia ANSWER: c
Example 2
Which number completes the series 1, 5, 21, 85, ...? A. 149 B. 253 C. 341 D. 405 ANSWER: C
GIFT
GIFT (General Import Format Technology) is an advanced question format that supports many question types:
Note: TalentLMS may not accept all GIFT features. Also, not all TalentLMS question types and features can be imported in GIFT format. |
1. Multiple choice questions
A GIFT multiple choice question entry must follow these rules:
- The question must be followed by an opening curly bracket.
- Each option must be typed on a different line.
- Each wrong option must be preceded by a tilde (~).
- Each correct option must be preceded by an equals symbol (=).
- The closing curly bracket goes on the last line.
Example
Pick the odd one out {
~Europe
~Asia
=Greenland
~Australia
}
Note: You can have more than one correct answer. |
For multiple choice questions of the True or False type, the rules are:
- Each statement must be typed on a different line.
- The true statement must be followed by the capitalized word "true" or the capitalized letter "t" inside curly brackets (i.e., {TRUE} or {T}).
- The false statement must be followed by the capitalized word "false" or the capitalized letter "f" inside curly brackets (i.e., {FALSE} or {F}).
Example
Grant is buried in Grant's tomb.{FALSE} The sun rises in the east.{TRUE}
2. Fill the gap
A GIFT fill-the-gap question entry must follow these rules:
- The sentence must be typed with the missing words inside curly brackets.
- The missing word must be preceded by an equals symbol (=).
Example
The {=quick} brown {=fox} jumps {=over} the lazy {=dog}
3. Drag and drop
A GIFT drag-and-drop question entry must follow these rules:
- The question must be followed by an opening curly bracket.
- Each correct match must be typed on a different line.
- Each correct match must be preceded by an equals symbol (=).
- Each matched options must be separated by a hyphen and a closing angle bracket (->).
- The closing curly bracket must go on the last line.
Example

=England -> London
=Germany -> Berlin
=Greece -> Athens
}
4. Free text
A GIFT free-text question entry must follow these rules:
- The question must be followed by an opening and a closing curly bracket ({}).
Example

Note: Free-text questions are imported without any information on how they are graded. Edit the question later in TalentLMS (see this article), to add the points needed for passing and define the keywords that award these points. For preventing users from copy-pasting the answers to free-text questions, see this article. |
