TalentLMS lets you "gamify" your eLearning experience to keep users engaged and motivated throughout their training. To do that, TalentLMS provides you with some of the most popular and "battle-tested" gamification techniques:
Let's have a quick look at these features and how they can "power up" your training portal:
Points are mainly used for "keeping score" and are a simple, subtle way to spark your learners' competitive spirit (with others and themselves).
TalentLMS offers a slew of options to configure when and how many points are awarded to your users (e.g., each login gives X points, each unit completion gives Y points, etc.). When a user wins points, they get a "Congratulations!" message, and their total is automatically updated on the top bar display.
For the following actions, users can earn points:
- On each login: When a user logs in to the platform.
- On each unit completion: When a user completes a course unit (e.g., video, SCORM, test).
- On each course completion: When a user completes a course.
- On each certificate: When a user earns a certificate.
- On each successful test completion: When a user passes a test, the points configured for this action are multiplied by the test score to calculate the total gamification points awarded.
- On each successful assignment completion: When a user completes an assignment successfully, the points configured are multiplied by the assignment grade to determine the total gamification points awarded.
- On each successful ILT completion: When a user completes an Instructor-Led Training (ILT) session, the points configured are multiplied by the ILT unit grade to calculate the total gamification points awarded. If an ILT unit is completed without being graded, no points will be awarded.
- On each discussion topic or comment: When a user creates a discussion topic or posts a comment.
- On each upvote on discussion comments: When a user receives an upvote on their comments.
Note: Actions have specific intervals in which they won’t reward users with points, such as logins (1 hour after login), unit completion (20 seconds after unit completion), discussion comments (3 minutes after commenting), and discussion comment upvotes (30 seconds after upvoting). Remember that logins, unit completions, discussion comments, and discussion comment upvotes that happen during these periods won’t reward users with points.
Badges are used to highlight the milestones in a user's learning progress, boost their sense of achievement, and increase motivation.
TalentLMS badges are easy to acquire at first, but they become harder to get as the user progresses with their training. When a user wins a badge, they get a "Congratulations!" message, and the badge is added to their profile.
TalentLMS offers a broad range of badge categories that are unlocked whenever one of the preset milestones is reached. Users receive badges for the following milestones:
- Activity badges: After a set number of logins (4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512).
- Learning badges: After completing a set number of courses (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128).
- Test badges: After passing a set number of tests (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256).
- Assignment badges: After completing a set number of assignments (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128).
- Perfectionism badges: After achieving scores of 90% or higher in a set number of tests or assignments (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128).
- Survey badges: After completing a set number of surveys (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128).
- Communication badges: After contributing a set number of discussion topics or comments (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256).
- Certification badges: After obtaining a set number of certificates (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128).
The Badge Set option lets you choose the visual theme for the badges awarded in your portal. Available styles include Old School, Stickers, Evolution, Space Lab, Super Clean, and Colorful, allowing you to adjust the look and feel of gamification elements to match your platform's style.
Levels represent a user's development stages.
TalentLMS offers three configurable options for leveling up (i.e., Raise level every X points, Raise level every Y completed courses, and Raise level every Z badges). By default, all users begin at "Level 1". Levels can be used to restrict a user’s access to courses by making a course available from a specific level and upwards.
Note: Courses that are locked for some levels are labeled as Unlocked on level X on the Course catalog instead of Get or Buy.
Levels keep your learners confident that they're moving forward by improving their skill set.
Note: The maximum level a user can reach is 20.
Leaderboards are used as a public "scoreboard".
TalentLMS offers five options for ranking users (i.e., Levels, Points, Badges, Courses, Certifications) based on their current performance.
Leaderboards help learners compare themselves to the best and can motivate certain learners to train more often and become better at it.
As there's no native way to have separate leaderboards for user segments or groups, you can achieve this by splitting users into different branches. That way, each branch leaderboard will be showing only the users belonging to the specific branch.
Rewards turn users' virtual achievements (Points, Badges, Levels) into tangible benefits, providing additional motivation for engagement and performance.
Through the Rewards feature, learners can receive discounts on paid course purchases once they reach specific gamification milestones. These rewards are automatically triggered once the milestone is achieved, allowing to gamify learning while offering meaningful incentives tied directly to user progress.
The available reward options include:
- Discount course purchases by Points: Apply a discount when learners exceed a defined number of accumulated points.
- Discount course purchases by Badges: Apply a discount when learners earn more than a specified number of badges.
- Discount course purchases by Level: Apply a discount when learners reach or exceed a defined level.
Gamification drawer
Learners can monitor their gamification totals and rankings with the Gamification (1) button.
The drawer (2) that pops up will display all the available information, such as Points, Levels, Badges, and Courses.
