TalentLMS offers two different ways to host live, interactive sessions with learners: Instructor-Led Training (ILT) units and Conferences. While both involve real-time participation, they serve distinct purposes.
A. What is an Instructor-Led Training (ILT) unit?
ILT units are live sessions linked to a course, held either in person or online via integrated or external conferencing tools.
Key features of ILT units:
- Learners must be enrolled in the course to participate.
- Learners can choose to self-register in the available sessions, or an Instructor can assign them to sessions as needed.
- Completing an ILT unit may impact overall course progress and completion.
- Instructors can track attendance and grade learners’ participation.
- Completion criteria can depend on the learner’s grade, attendance, or the session’s end.

B. What is a Conference?
A Conference is a standalone live webinar hosted online via TalentLMS’s native conferencing tools, independent of any course.
Key features of Conferences:
- The session moderator registers participants; users cannot self-register.
- Attendance is optional and does not affect learner progress or course completion.
- Participants are not graded for attending Conferences.

C. What’s the difference between ILT units and Conferences?
ILT units are the ideal option if you’re looking to deliver structured training that contributes to course progress and allows learners to self-register.
On the other hand, if you want to host standalone live events (e.g., an all-hands meeting or a guest speaker session), where participation might be optional, users are manually invited, and attendance isn’t tracked or graded, then Conferences are a better fit.
D. Can ILT units and Conferences be used together?
While both ILT units and Conferences offer live participation, they serve different purposes and cannot be combined within the same session.
