Among the available Learning Activities, TalentLMS allows you to give out assignments to your Learners, who can then submit their answers in various formats to be reviewed and graded.
You can specify which submission methods will be available to your Learners, and you can also apply time limits to your assignments.
Step 1: Add an assignment to a course
1. Sign in to your TalentLMS account as an Instructor, go to Courses, hover over the course you want to add an assignment to, and click Edit course (1).
2. Click Add > Learning Activities and choose Assignment (2).
3. In the respective fields, type the assignment name and its description (3).
Step 2: Configure the options of the assignment
1. Click the Assignment options button (1) from the toolbar at the bottom of the page.
2. Choose how the unit should be completed (2). The options are:
- When the Instructor accepts the answer: the assignment unit is considered complete only when the Instructor has graded it. If the sequential rule (i.e., Units must all be seen and completed sequentially) is enabled for the course, users cannot proceed to the next unit until their assignment has been graded.
- When uploading an answer: the assignment unit is considered completed (passed) the moment a user uploads their answer. If the answer is wrong, the Instructor can change the unit status to “Not Passed” or “Pending” (i.e., the user can try again).
3. Optionally, add a time limit to your assignment. You can:
- Specify the due date (3).
- Add an end time (4) for that date, after which Learners won’t be able to submit the assignment.
- Specify the duration (5) of the assignment in minutes. The timer starts as soon as the Learner clicks to start the assignment. If a Learner starts the assignment and then exits, the timer will continue. If the timer runs out before the Learner submits their answer, they will fail the assignment.
Note: You can add one or more of the above options. For instance, an assignment may have a duration but no due date, or vice versa. |
4. Choose which reply methods will be available to your Learners for this assignment (6). At least 1 method must be enabled. The options are:
- Text
- Upload a file
- Record video
- Record audio
- Record screen
Note: The options to add time settings to your assignment, as well as choose which reply methods will be available for its submissions, are unlocked only when the Legacy interface is disabled. Otherwise, these options will be grayed out. |
5. Click Save (7) to save your assignment settings.
6. To activate your new Assignment unit for enrolled Learners, click the vertical ellipsis icon ( ⋮ ) next to your unit and then, click Publish unit (8).
Step 3: Learner submissions
When Learners access the unit, they can see the assignment details and they must click Start assignment (1) to begin.
To submit an answer, they are provided with one or more of the five following options (2), as defined by the Instructor:
- Text reply: Learners manually type in their answer.
- Upload a file: Learners can upload a file from their device.
Note: The accepted file types and size limits are: GIF, JPEG, PNG (10 MB), AAC, AIF / AIFF, MP3, OGG, WAV, WEBM, WMA, 3GPP, AVI, MP4, MPEG, MOV, FLV, WMV, DOC, PDF, XLS, PPT, PPTX, XLSX, DOCX, ZIP (600 MB or 100MB for the Free plans). |
- Record video: Learners can record a video using their device’s camera.
- Record audio: Learners can record an audio answer using their device’s microphone.
- Record screen: Learners can record their device screen.
Note: Learners must click the Start recording button, and when done, click the Stop recording button. The minimum required duration for the recording is 5 seconds. |
To submit their reply, Learners have to click the Submit button (3).
They will be presented with their answer, as well as an option to Edit their answer (4) while the unit is pending a reply from the instructor (if the completion method is set to “When instructor accepts answer”).
On the other hand, if the assignment is set to be completed “When uploading an answer”, then the unit will be completed immediately.
Step 4: Review the assignment and grade it
TalentLMS allows Instructors to easily grade Assignments and ILTs through the Grading Hub. Click here to read more.
