Courses in TalentLMS can include learning activities such as tests, surveys, SCORM | xAPI | cmi5 content, and ILTs. To be able to add a learning activity to your course, you’ll need to log in as an Instructor.
To add a test:
1. Go to Courses, click the course you wish to add a test to, and then click Edit course.
2. Click Add (1), hover over Learning Activities, and select Test (2). A test unit will be created in “draft” status. You can publish your test once it’s ready.
3. Give your test a name. You may also add a description for your test here.
4. To add a question to your test, select the type of your question from the right-hand panel (4). The options are: Multiple choice, Fill the gaps, Ordering, Match the pairs, Free text. In addition, you have the following options:
- You can create a randomized test, using questions drawn randomly from a pool of existing questions.
- You can import test questions in GIFT/AIKEN format.
- You can reuse existing test questions.
Note: Click here to read more about test question types. |
5. A drawer will open on the right-hand side of the screen (5). Type the question and the possible answers, optionally add a tag, and click Save.
6. Your question is added to the question list of your test. If you’d like to edit it, remove it from your test, or delete it, click the vertical ellipsis icon (⋮) (6) next to your question and select the option you need.
Note: If you’ve previously built other tests in this or other courses, all of their questions will be available to use again in this test. Click Existing question (1) from the toolbar to include an existing question in the test. A drawer will open with a list of all your test questions to choose from. This list can be filtered by course and you can preview each question too. Use the Added (2) toggle next to each existing question to add it to or remove it from your test. |
7. If you’d like to change the order of the questions of your test, simply drag and drop the questions in the list as needed to define the new order.
Test options
TalentLMS provides a number of different configuration options for your tests. Once you’ve prepared your test and its questions, you might want to edit its test options. From the list of your course units, click the vertical ellipsis icon next to your test unit (⋮) (1) and select Test options (2). A drawer will open on the right-hand side of the screen.
Configuration
From the Configuration tab (3), you can:
- add duration (a timer) to your test
- define the passing score
- shuffle questions and possible answers
- allow repetitions(if not passed, or always)
- define the completion rules of your test, e.g., if and when to show correct answers, etc.
- define the test’s behavior
- require the Learner’s snapshot or a password to start the test
- add a message to be shown when the test is passed or failed
Note: When the test is passed, the unit is considered completed, and the Learner can move to the next unit. When the test is failed, there are two possible scenarios, depending on the rules of the course: A. When the units of the course are set to be completed in sequential order, the Learner will not be able to continue to the next unit. B. When the units of the course are set to be completed in any order, the Learner will be able to continue to the next units. Administrators can reset a Learner’s progress in a test unit, as described in this article. |
Note: If you’ve selected to always allow repetitions (i.e., multiple test attempts), the score of the last successful attempt is used as the final test score. Also:

Weight
Click Weight (4) under Test options to define how specific questions affect the overall grading of a test and add a different weight to each question.
Click here to read more about how question weights work.
Note: If the course is set to be completed “when all units are completed”, and the Learner fails the test, the course is marked as not passed only when the user has submitted all test attempts. |
Once your test is ready, click the vertical ellipsis icon next to your test unit (⋮) (1) from the list of all course units and select Publish (2). When published, the test unit will be available to Learners enrolled in the course.
