In TalentLMS, courses are composed of units. These units can be simple content units, units with a video, interactive ones using SCORM, and many more. Depending on the way a course is set up by an Instructor, the end users (Learners) can take the course in a sequential order or in any order.
The first time a user accesses a course, they will be greeted by a modal (1) that gives them a tip about how to navigate the course units.
Here’s how a Learner (or an Instructor previewing the course) can move between units:
If the course is set to be taken in any order (via Course Options > Completion tab), Learners can skip units that would normally require waiting or interaction (e.g., Tests). In this case, a Skip (2) button appears at the top right, allowing them to move to the next unit without completing the current one.
Note: If a user reaches the last unit and clicks on Skip, they will be taken to the first unit of the course. |
Standard content units (Content, Video, Audio, Document, etc.)
If the course is set to be taken in a sequential order, Learners must complete each unit before moving on by clicking the Next (3) button at the top right. As the tooltip explains, this completes the current unit and advances to the next.
Note: The first time a user visits the unit, the Next button tooltip will inform them that this will complete the unit and go to the next one. If revisiting an already completed unit, the tooltip will simply indicate that it will go to the next unit. |
To go back to the previous unit, click on the Prev (4) button. This action will not complete the current unit.
Depending on the unit options, you may have configured the unit to be completed after a period of time, in which case a counter (5) will be displayed in the top right corner, indicating how much time is left. Once the time runs out, the counter will change to a Next button, and the Learner will be able to go to the next unit.
If you have set a question as the unit completion method, this will be indicated at the top. The button Question included (6) serves as a quick link to the actual question, which is located at the bottom of the unit (7). The Learner will first have to answer the question successfully, and they will be automatically taken to the next unit.
Learning activities (Tests, Assignments, etc.)
These types of units require some form of input or interaction from the Learner so that the Next button is unlocked. It will display the following information based on the type of unit:
- Test: The button will display Pass the test to continue.
- Survey: The button will display Complete the survey to continue.
- Assignment: The button shows Complete the assignment to continue, and if it is set to be completed once an Instructor accepts the reply, then it will show Pending reply from instructor.
- ILT: If the Learner hasn’t registered yet, the button will show Register to the session you’d like to attend. If the session is set to take place in the future, the button displays Please join at the scheduled time. They will be allowed to move to the next unit depending on the ILT completion options (when the instructor provides feedback, when the session has ended, or when the learner attends the session)
- SCORM: The button will display Complete the unit until the criteria set in the SCORM content are satisfied.
Once the above units’ criteria are met, the button will display Next, and the user will be able to proceed to the following unit.
Last unit in a course
When a user reaches the last unit in the course, and it’s the only unit remaining to complete it, the button will display Complete unit (8), and clicking on it will complete the course, sending the user to the Finish screen.
