The Timeline records nearly every action that takes place in your portal, who did what, to which user or course, and when, and is often the fastest way to answer a “what happened?” question or to fill a gap left by other reports.
This article lists every event the Timeline can record, grouped by category, with a short description of what each event captures. For instructions on how to open the Timeline, filter it, and export results, see How to work with the extended timeline in TalentLMS.
How to read a Timeline entry
Every Timeline row contains:
- The user, course, group, branch, skill, certificate, or other portal object the action applies to. (1)
- The user (or automated process) that performed the action. (2)
- How the action took place (e.g., by an Admin, via group enrollment, via import, via API, etc.).
- The date and timethe event took place. (3)
| Note: The time of the event is available when exporting the Timeline results as CSV. |
You can narrow results using four filters:
- Date range (From—To) (1)
- Event (2)
- User (3)
- Course (4)
|
Note: The Timeline shows how the enrollment happened by appending a context label to the entry. Possible values:

These events log statements received from TinCan (xAPI) content packages. They appear with a [TC] prefix in the Timeline.
- [TC] activity records activity-related TinCan/xAPI data received from TinCan content.
- [TC] attempt records attempt-related TinCan/xAPI data received from TinCan content.
- [TC] experience records experience-related TinCan/xAPI data received from TinCan content.

The Timeline captures most portal activity, but a few cases are not fully logged:
- Mass actions are not indicated. Bulk operations performed from a Group's user list or from a Custom Report (for example, mass-enrolling users in a course or mass-updating user fields) are recorded as individual events without any indicator that they originated from a mass action or who performed the mass action.
- For the following events, the Timeline records what changed but not who performed the change, so it isn't possible to tell from the entry alone which Administrator or Instructor carried out the action:
- Added user to course / Removed user from course (via mass actions)
- Added user to group / Removed user from group
- Added course to group / Removed course from group
- Added user to branch / Removed user from branch
- Added course to branch / Removed course from branch
